Charles Bohu first created the rigolette in 1902. “Rigolette” was in fact the name of his cat, named after the eponymous character in Verdi’s famous opera.
In 1930, as a result of the success of his Rigolettes, Charles Bohu transformed his grocery into a sophisticated confectionery, and contracted the services of an Italian mosaic artist to decorate his shop front. Although the shop itself has since moved, you can still admire the previous blue mosaic façade at number 26, rue de la Marne in Nantes, France which has been classified as heritage building.
Charles Bohu’s successors have continued to use the same recipe and his original handmade production methods, with one small modification: natural ingredients such as hibiscus, carrots or even seaweed have replaced all artificial colorants.
The Rigolettes are even housed in a replica of their original packaging, meticulously recreated from a precious old box that has been in the family’s possession for over a century.
