Arnaud Soubeyran Calissons Guimauves Nougat

In 1837, Mr Arnaud and Miss Soubeyran got married and decided to manufacture the famous Provençal treats : Nougats. The constant seek of high standard raw materials will soon increase the fame of the confectioner Arnaud Soubeyran.

Three generations of hard-workers and of an artisanal know-how helped the brand to be standing where they are at today. These confectioneries are now exported worldwide.

The “Nougats of Montélimar” were born in the late 17th century when the almond trees introduced in the area gave their first fruits. These confectionaries were first promoted by Emile Loubet, governor of Montélimar and then President of the French Republic in 1899.

The two nougats (white and black) are indispensable ingredients of the 13 Desserts, a cornerstone of Christmas celebrations in “provençal” households. They stand for the white penitents and black penitents, according to some stories. In others, the soft white nougat represents purity and goodness, while the harder, brittle black nougat symbolizes impurity and forces of evil.
